TICA's recently-concluded Thailand Destination Update (TDU) to Chiang Mai provided participants with an exciting new glimpse into this destination's cultural treasures and unique soft powers.While renowned for its rich heritage and natural beauty, Chiang Mai is rapidly emerging as a dynamic hub for business events.
Chiang Mai, often referred to as the cultural capital of northern Thailand, boasts a unique blend of ancient traditions and modern developments. The city's historic temples, such as Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, offer a window into Thailand's spiritual and architectural heritage. The vibrant night markets and local crafts, including the famous Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, showcase the region's artistic flair and bustling commercial spirit.
The TDU program highlighted Chiang Mai's potential as a premier destination for business events. The city's infrastructure has seen significant upgrades, with state-of-the-art convention centers like the Chiang Mai International Exhibition and Convention Centre (CMECC), offering world-class facilities. DAY 1 : The first day of TICA's Northern MICE Destination Update
Update began with a flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Attendees then embarked on a full-day excursion, visiting a renowned elephant sculpture artisan at Ban Jang Nak, experiencing local handicrafts at Ontai Farm, exploring a cacao farm at Skugga Estate,
and discovering a new holy place at Monkuware Thao Wessuwan Temple & Garden. The day concluded with a delightful dinner featuring Thai cuisine served Chef's Table style at a local, Michelin-Guide restaurant called Food for You.
DAY 2 : Commenced with a visit to Baan 104
A heritage home, where participants explored the concept of 'home' and its evolution. Following this, a culinary journey ensued, with a lunch featuring local cuisine at 1's Kitchen Journey restaurant, where participants were greeted by the renowned Chef Nueng.
The afternoon was dedicated to a fragrance-making workshop at Artistic Lab, followed by the Sun Downer networking cocktail event which was organised at the RatiLanna Riverside Spa Resort in Chiang Mai. Hosted on the hotel's river pier, the event provided stunning views and valuable insights into the local hospitality industry, where DMC buyers met with local TICA members in CNX. The day concluded with a visit to the Neighborhood Food Community, a unique venue showcasing local cuisine and fostering networking opportunities.
DAY 3: On the final day, participants traveled to Mae Teang district
To explore the faith and imagination of locals, visiting Wat Bandensali Si Mueang Kaen, also known as Wat Banden; and the Dantewada "Land of Angels" Waterfall Park; unique venues representing local beliefs. Lunch was enjoyed at Saiyud and Doctor Sai Kitchen, from the renowned Ajarn Saiud or 'Doctor Sai,'
before visiting several hotels: Intercontinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping, An Ihg Hotel; Melia Chiang Mai; and Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel. Afterwards, participants enjoyed the "TICA Open MIC" session, during which each attendee presented a homework assignment based on the topic, "Breath of Life." The session concluded with an open discussion and feedback on the TDU 2024 Chiang Mai arrangements.
