Following a record-breaking year and with a “MICE Celebration Year” on the horizon, Thailand is rapidly cementing its place as Asia’s premier destination for international conventions.
Long recognised for its meetings and incentives appeal, the country is now making notable gains in the global conventions sector. According to the 2024 ICCA rankings, Thailand has climbed to 25th globally, 5th in Asia Pacific, and 1st in ASEAN for international conventions hosted. Bangkok now holds the impressive position of 7th worldwide and 3rd in the region.
Speaking at the Thailand Innovative Meetings Exchange (TIME) 2025, Puripan Bunnag, Acting President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), noted the growing return of international conventions to Asia, with Thailand at the forefront. This momentum is underpinned by strong public-private sector collaboration, enhanced infrastructure, and Thailand’s global brand appeal.
Major developments like the revamped Queen Sirikit National Convention Center and True Icon Hall, along with landmark events such as the ICCA Congress 2023 in Bangkok, have further reinforced international confidence.
In 2024, Thailand welcomed 1.16 million international MICE visitors—just shy of its pre-pandemic peak—generating 70 billion baht (approx. £1.5 billion) in revenue. TCEB’s 2025 targets are even more ambitious: 1.3 million international delegates and 78 billion baht in spending, with growth led by markets such as India, China, South Korea, and Kazakhstan.
While Bangkok remains a focal point, regional cities like Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, and Songkhla are increasingly hosting academic and medical conventions, aided by improved facilities and university networks. TCEB’s regional offices have empowered cities such as Udon Thani and Nakhon Ratchasima to secure world-class events like the International Horticultural Expositions in 2026 and 2029 respectively.
Looking ahead to 2026—Thailand’s “MICE Celebration Year”—flagship events include the IASP World Congress on Pain, Gastech, the World Bank meetings, and the GSTC Global Summit in Phuket. MICE fast-track lanes at major airports are also in the works, underscoring Thailand’s commitment to delivering seamless, world-class experiences.
