Asia’s largest sustainability forum for tourism, PHIST 2025, brought together more than 1,300 delegates in Phuket this September, marking its strongest turnout yet. Now in its eighth year, the event has grown into a flagship platform for hoteliers, policymakers and innovators to address the pressing environmental and social challenges facing Asia’s hospitality industry.
Held at Angsana Laguna Phuket, PHIST 2025 featured 25 sessions, a sustainable fashion show, a farm to table showcase and an awards ceremony celebrating best practices in sustainability.
Discussions centred on the urgent need for balanced growth, with Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat stressing that the island’s future competitiveness depends on Special Economic Zone status to better manage infrastructure, housing and environmental resources.
Industry leaders including Minor International’s William E. Heinecke, recipient of the Green Giant Award, warned that unchecked housing and infrastructure pressures could erode Phuket’s long-term appeal. Speakers called for stronger collaboration between government, industry and communities, reminding delegates of the successful spirit of unity that drove Phuket’s Sandbox reopening during the pandemic.
