Thailand has reinforced its global reputation for sustainable tourism following a series of accolades at the Green Destinations Story Awards and Green Destinations Awards 2026, presented during ITB Berlin 2026 in Germany. The recognition highlights the country's continued commitment to responsible tourism development, with destinations such as Ko Lanta and Chiang Khan leading the way.
Representing Thailand at the awards ceremony were Natthriya Thaweevong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and Chairperson of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Board, alongside Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT. The delegation underscored Thailand's strategic focus on sustainability at one of the world's most prominent travel trade platforms.
Thapanee noted that the awards reflect the breadth of Thailand's progress, spanning environmental conservation, climate resilience, and heritage-led destination development. She emphasised that the recognition goes beyond international acclaim, demonstrating the country's ability to develop high-quality destinations that prioritise environmental stewardship, community engagement, and long-term sustainability.
Ko Lanta emerged as a standout success in the Nature & Scenery category, with its regenerative coastal initiative receiving top honours. The project, centred on protecting biodiversity through the “Returning Homes to Hermit Crabs” campaign, showcases strong collaboration between national park authorities, local communities, and tourism stakeholders. It also forms part of a broader initiative to elevate Krabi as a model for sustainable tourism development.
Chiang Khan, in Loei province, was also recognised as a winner in the Environment & Climate category for its efforts to transform a traditional fishing village into a sustainable tourism destination along the Mekong River. Meanwhile, Uthai Thani earned second place for its innovative approach linking climate resilience with cultural heritage through the promotion of the Giant Gourami as a symbol of local identity.
Further recognition was awarded to Takua Pa Old Town in Phang-nga and Doi Phu Kha National Park in Nan under the Green Destinations Awards and Certification Programme, acknowledging their achievements in sustainable destination management.
Together, these accolades reflect Thailand's growing leadership in sustainable tourism, showcasing how environmental responsibility, cultural preservation, and community-driven initiatives can successfully shape the future of the country's tourism industry.
