Thailand continued to strengthen its reputation as a leading destination for sustainable tourism and Business Events as the global tourism industry prepared for the 2026 Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Annual Summit. With strong visitor growth in key destinations such as Bangkok and Phuket, the country increasingly shifted its tourism strategy towards a high-value, sustainability-driven model focused on long-term impact rather than volume alone.
Held from 11–13 May 2026 in Gyeongju and Pohang, South Korea, the PATA Annual Summit marked the organisation's 75th anniversary under the theme "Navigating Towards a Resilient Future". Tourism authorities and industry leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region, including Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Australia, gathered to discuss strategies surrounding sustainable tourism development, resilience, and responsible destination management.
Thailand's participation reflected its growing influence within the regional tourism landscape, particularly through the efforts of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, which continued to align its long-term strategy with global sustainability goals. Alongside its appeal as a leisure destination, Thailand increasingly positioned itself as a regional hub for Business Events, attracting international conferences, incentive groups, and corporate travellers.
Bangkok remained central to this strategy, supported by strong aviation connectivity, world-class hotels, and modern event infrastructure capable of hosting large-scale international meetings and conventions. Meanwhile, Phuket evolved beyond its reputation as a leisure destination into a recognised sustainability hub. The island recently hosted the GSTC 2026 Global Conference, reinforcing Thailand's commitment to responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.
Thailand also experienced rising demand from long-haul markets in Europe and North America, with travellers increasingly seeking wellness, luxury, and culturally immersive experiences. This aligned with the country's focus on attracting higher-spending visitors who contributed to longer stays and greater economic value.
Despite ongoing economic pressures and rising aviation costs globally, Thailand's tourism sector continued to demonstrate resilience. The country welcomed over 35.5 million international visitors in 2024 and nearly 33 million in 2025, while tourism revenue for 2026 was projected to reach approximately THB 2.58 trillion. Through community-based tourism initiatives, sustainability programmes, and strategic investment in Business Events, Thailand continued to position itself at the forefront of sustainable tourism development in the Asia-Pacific region.
