Soaring Higher, with Caution

Dear Members and Industry Friends,

I'm delighted to share the exciting outcomes from our recent Annual General Meeting and the unveiling of our 2023 Annual Report. This is an opportune moment to reflect on Thailand's remarkable strides in the business industry sector.

Despite recent challenges, 2023 marked a significant rebound for us as an Association and for the broader business events industry. We achieved nearly 70% of our pre-COVID business levels, signalling a strong resurgence driven by pent-up demand and the dedication of event organisers. This positive momentum has been instrumental in Thailand's continued growth.

Last year, we welcomed a substantial number of MICE travellers, with India (231,120) and China (96,484) leading the way. Additionally, we witnessed shifts in the industries hosting these events, with Beauty and Wellness leading the charge, followed by Insurance, Banking, Pharmaceuticals, and Automotive Parts & Electronics. Looking ahead to 2024, we anticipate this upward trajectory to continue, fuelled by favourable economic conditions and ongoing government support. The latter can be clearly seen by the government's target of attracting 40 million foreign visitors this year, which would put as on par with the pre-pandemic figures recorded in 2019.

Despite global uncertainties, including rising airfare costs and geopolitical shifts, we are determined to navigate these challenges. We're actively addressing talent shortages by investing in education and skills development, collaborating closely with academic institutions and industry bodies to groom future leaders.

Moreover, the expansion of MICE cities across Thailand offers exciting opportunities for event planners and clients, showcasing a diverse array of destinations to explore beyond traditional hubs. Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Samui emerged as the top MICE destinations, further underlining Thailand's attractiveness for business events. Continued investment in increased connectivity and high-calibre infrastructure are leading the charge in putting these destinations on the map, such as the planned expansion of the Samui Airport; the regional business expansion forecasted for Thai banks following the encouraging growth of ASEAN economies; and the ongoing integration of AI in the business events sphere. Furthermore, as the leader of Thailand's business industry drivers, TCEB, are also dedicated to showcasing Thai cities as a high-value destination through various strategies, including its recent '3Ls' strategy which aims to craft larger than life, long-lasting and localised experiences for business events travellers.

In this issue, we're specifically highlighting Bangkok as a premier destination for business events, due to its world-class infrastructure and hospitality, rich cultural heritage, and of course, its thriving business sector.

Our commitment to sustainability remains steadfast, with a growing focus on resource allocation and sustainable strategies. We aspire to elevate our industry's standards on an international platform, reflecting our dedication to responsible practices. In this issue, two representatives from our members reflect on how they are crafting sustainable experiences in the hospitality industry, giving knowledgeable insights and aspirational advice.

As we celebrate TICA's 40th anniversary, I am extending my heartfelt gratitude to our members for their unwavering support. Together with our dedicated committees and board members, we've achieved remarkable milestones. Your commitment has been the cornerstone of our success. Looking forward, let's inspire the next generation to join our industry and champion change. Through their enthusiasm and innovation, we will propel Team Thailand to even greater heights.

Thank you once again for your continued dedication and support.

Warm regards,
Sumate Sudasna
