Be Prepared. Busy Days Ahead

Dear TICA Members,

In light of current global challenges, maintaining optimism is not merely a choice but a necessity for navigating the intricate business events landscape. The aftermath of the COVID era has brought forth a new phase marked by conflicts such as the Ukraine-Russia war and the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict, contributing to the escalation of oil prices and the increased cost of air travel. However, amid these challenges, there are still numerous reasons to remain optimistic and adopt a positive outlook.

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) together with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) are actively working towards revitalising the country's economy and tourism sector. Despite global conflicts, Thailand is strategically positioning itself to attract business travellers, particularly in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.

China's reopening has been a game-changer for Thailand's MICE industry, allowing the return of business travellers for exhibitions and conventions after a three-year hiatus. The positive momentum was created following the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Bangkok, showcasing the resilience of the MICE sector, a vital component of Thailand's hospitality industry.

Notably, TCEB has set an ambitious target of 23.1 million MICE travellers in 2024, capable of generating up to THB 136 billion. The organisation's collective efforts with TAT in successfully pursuing vital policies, such as visa exemptions to attract MICE visitors from key markets like China and India, have paid off handsomely. Despite challenges, the MICE sector's potential to contribute significantly towards Thailand's GDP remains high.

The TAT is equally committed to boosting the country's revenue to THB 3.5 trillion in 2024, focusing on both domestic and international tourism. The "365 Days, Marvelous Thailand Every Day" campaign aims to promote year-round domestic travel, ensuring a steady flow of tourism income.

Secondary cities are not overlooked in this strategic plan, with intentions to elevate 10 of them to primary city status. This move is poised to enhance economic potential and provide diverse travel experiences for both tourists and business travellers. Observing a significant 34.47% increase in Thai tourists in secondary cities underscores the success of such initiatives.

Pattaya, highlighted in this issue as a world-class MICE destination, stands as a testament to Thailand's commitment to excellence in conference facilities. Venues such as the Pattaya Exhibition And Convention Hall (PEACH) can offer top-notch infrastructure for successful MICE events, especially large-scale conventions. From luxurious five-star accommodations to budget-friendly options, Pattaya ensures a range of choices for diverse budgets. Attendees can indulge in unique experiences, exploring the city's vibrant Walking Street, embarking on island trips, or immersing themselves in cultural visits to temples.

The diversity of Pattaya's culinary scene, offering everything from traditional Thai to international cuisines, adds another layer to the overall experience. After business meetings, participants can unwind with entertainment options, including cabaret shows and live music. Professional event management services guarantee the flawless execution of events, making Pattaya an exceptional destination that seamlessly blends business with leisure.

I am also delighted to report that TICA's first membership quarterly luncheon of 2024, held on February 15th at the InterContinental Bangkok, was a resounding success. With the theme of 'Enabling Sustainability into Profitability' which was very apt in the current socio-economic landscape, the luncheon had an incredible turnout of 160 members, a higher number than expected.

Despite the prevailing global challenges, the positive indicators for Thailand's MICE sector and tourism overall are promising. While there are hurdles to overcome, this year presents a unique opportunity to recover from losses incurred during the COVID era. Staying positive, planning strategically, and executing well-thought-out plans will undoubtedly lead to reaping the benefits of a potentially lucrative 2024. So, let's embark on this journey with optimism and determination, ensuring a successful and rewarding year ahead. Happy hunting!
