Phuket Hosted Record-Breaking GSTC2026, Leading the Future of Sustainable Tourism

In April 2026, Phuket took centre stage in the global sustainable tourism movement as it hosted the GSTC2026 Global Sustainable Tourism Conference from 21-24 April. Welcoming delegates from over 100 countries, the event marked the largest edition in the conference's history and played a pivotal role in shaping the future of green travel policies worldwide.

Organised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), the international body responsible for setting sustainability standards across the tourism sector, the conference convened policymakers, industry leaders, tourism operators, and cultural experts. Together, they addressed pressing issues surrounding sustainable development, environmental responsibility, and cultural preservation.

Phuket was selected as the host destination not only for its global appeal but also for its growing reputation as a leader in sustainable tourism. While long recognised for its natural beauty and vibrant culture, the island had in recent years taken significant strides towards more responsible tourism practices. Initiatives led by local authorities and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports—ranging from plastic reduction programmes to eco-conscious hospitality and conservation efforts—highlighted Phuket's commitment to balancing tourism growth with environmental stewardship.

The conference programme featured a series of panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions, focusing on key themes such as sustainable travel policies, green certification standards, carbon-neutral tourism initiatives, and community-based tourism development. These discussions provided a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, enabling destinations and organisations to adopt more sustainable approaches across the tourism value chain.

Beyond its policy impact, GSTC2026 further reinforced Phuket's position as an emerging hub for Business Events in Southeast Asia. With its strong infrastructure, world-class venues, and strategic investments in the sector, the island continued to attract high-profile international conferences that drive both economic growth and global visibility.

As the tourism industry faced increasing pressure to address climate change and over-tourism, GSTC2026 represented a critical opportunity to align global efforts towards a more sustainable future. Phuket, through its ongoing commitment to responsible tourism, demonstrated how destinations can successfully integrate environmental care with cultural preservation and long-term growth.
